MBPP Turns To Special Machinery To Remove Abandoned Vehicles

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 14 (Bernama) -- The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is using the Multi-Purpose Loader with Crane, a specialised machinery, to lift and remove abandoned or tyreless vehicles that obstruct the use of public parking spaces.

MBPP Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the machinery, acquired in 2022, was specifically intended to facilitate the removal of abandoned vehicles, especially those that cannot be safely moved using conventional tow trucks.

"This equipment is primarily used for abandoned or end-of-life vehicles that are impractical to tow using conventional tow trucks, such as vehicles without tyres or those parked in a condition that makes it difficult for tow trucks to access and remove them safely," he said when contacted today.

He said the special machinery recently gained attention on social media following a user's post showing it being used to remove a vehicle, drawing positive reactions from the public towards MBPP's efforts to address the issue of abandoned vehicles.

However, he added that the machinery was not routinely used for illegal parking cases or vehicles obstructing traffic, as MBPP has other enforcement vehicles specifically used for towing operations.

Rajendran said the Multi-Purpose Loader with Crane could also be used for other tasks requiring the removal of heavy objects belonging to the local authority, including concrete barriers.

Earlier, a three-minute-28-second video went viral on social media showing the special machinery lifting a car from a parking area onto itself before transporting it away to clear the public parking space.
