KERALAM (INDIA), Sept 14 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) will follow up on efforts to widen access for Malaysian goods to the Indian market, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the matter was discussed during his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, with several restrictions still needing to be addressed to facilitate trade between the two countries.

“We believe that some restrictions are still in place, for example airlines. We are still requesting for additional facility in some other cities,” said Anwar during a press conference with Malaysian media in Calicut here, before concluding his working visit to India today.

He said the matter was also raised during his meeting with Keralam Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and Malaysia would use the appropriate channels to address the matter and further strengthen trade and investment ties with India.

“This is a concern for the request from the Keralam chief minister. I think that is reasonable, but we need to address it through the right mechanism,” said Anwar.

The Prime Minister emphasised Malaysia’s view of India as a vital economic partner, aiming to strengthen trade and investment between the two nations.

He said widening market access was important to ensure more Malaysian goods could penetrate the Indian market, thereby benefiting local industries and businesses.

Earlier, Anwar and Satheesan discussed efforts to strengthen economic cooperation and facilitate greater trade and investment between Malaysia and India’s southern state, Keralam, formerly known as Kerala.

The discussion took place during Satheesan’s courtesy call on Anwar in Calicut, held in conjunction with the Prime Minister’s working visit to India and his maiden visit to Keralam as Prime Minister.

Anwar arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the BRICS Leaders’ Summit hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and delivered the National Statement on Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.
