PUTRAJAYA, Sept 14 (Bernama) -- The spread of sentiments that can divide society remains a major challenge to efforts to foster patriotism and strengthen national unity, said Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM) director-general Datuk Dr Roslan Hussin.
He said the challenge warranted serious attention as Malaysia’s diverse population must share common aspirations for the country’s development.
“We must make our country the best it can be and live in peace and harmony. We must not fight among ourselves because if we take the wrong course of action, the nation we have built could quickly collapse, given our diverse backgrounds,” he told reporters here.
He said this after officiating the prize-giving ceremony for the national-level Gelombang Aku Kasih Malaysia (GAKM) Apresiasi Ekspresi Merdeka Creative Video Competition here today.
Roslan said geopolitical developments, economic shifts and climate change had made the public increasingly aware that national defence and well-being were shared responsibilities, particularly in efforts to foster patriotism and strengthen unity.
In this regard, he said AKM would step up efforts to foster patriotism among all segments of society, including minority communities and persons with disabilities, to ensure that no Malaysian is left behind.
“We will also reach out to the deaf and mute, ensuring that no one is left behind. They, too, contribute to the nation and play a role in developing this beloved country,” he said.
Commenting on the competition, he said its second edition attracted 189 entries from across the country, involving public university students, civil servants, digital media practitioners and social media influencers.
Mohd Zulhafin Che Noh of Kemaman, Terengganu, emerged victorious with “Tanda Kasih”, followed by Mohamad Hafizi Mohd of Pulai Chondong, Kelantan, in second place with “Akan Ku Kasih Malaysia”, while Dhiya’ Wafaa Johari of Bukit Mertajam, Penang, took third place with “Apa Itu Merdeka?”.
Roslan said the competition provided a platform for Malaysians to showcase their national identity, unity and love for the country through creative works, while spreading messages of patriotism among the public.
