MEDAN, Sept 13 (Bernama) -- The relationship between institutions and countries must be translated through joint research, expertise sharing, technology transfer, and talent development.
The Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, said that this approach is essential to ensure knowledge and expertise can generate real value and impact on society.
His Highness noted that artificial intelligence (AI) is now influencing various sectors, ranging from education and health to the economy and public services.
"Its potential is vast, but technological advancement should not be measured solely by its sophistication, and AI development must be guided by ethics, human values, and social responsibility," he decreed.
His Royal Highness made these remarks when closing the International Conference on Next-Generation Digital Technologies (NEXT-D) 2026 at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), Medan, Indonesia, today.
Also gracing the event were the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil, along with their daughter, Hajah Farah Adriana Jamalullail.
Among those present were Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah, UMSU Rector Prof Dr Akrim, M.Pd, and the Executive Chairman of the Faizuddin Centre of Educational Excellence (FCoEE), Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Kamarudin Hussin.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra decreed that technology must act as a facilitator to expand opportunities, particularly for the youth, asnaf (the needy), and under-resourced communities.
"Through it, access to education and health services can be expanded, economic opportunities opened up, while the skills and potential of the younger generation continue to be empowered," His Royal Highness decreed.
Meanwhile, FCoEE, in a statement issued by the Arau Palace, stated that the organisation of NEXT-D 2026 reflects the ongoing commitment of higher education institutions from Malaysia and Indonesia in strengthening academic networks and cross-border cooperation, particularly in the fields of digital technology and innovation.
"Such cooperation is believed to be able to strengthen a digital ecosystem that is not only innovative and competitive, but also grounded in ethics, inclusivity, and benefits for the global community," the statement said.
The organisation of NEXT-D, being held from yesterday until tomorrow, is co-organised by FCoEE and UMSU with the theme "Transforming The Digital Landscape With Emerging Technologies," bringing together over 200 global experts, academicians, and industry players from various countries.
NEXT-D 2026 focuses on the role of cutting-edge technology in shaping and driving the transformation of the global digital landscape, while serving as a platform for knowledge sharing, research, and expertise between academia, industry, and stakeholders.
