GEORGE TOWN, Sept 13 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) is targeting at least 10 KUSKOP MADANI Sales events in Penang this year to help ease the people's cost-of-living burden.
Its Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said seven such programmes had been held in the state so far, with the ministry planning to expand them to other areas based on needs and suitability.
“In Penang, we will try to launch at least 10 (KUSKOP Madani Sales), but we will also look at the needs and suitability,” he told reporters after officiating the KUSKOP MADANI Sales programme in Seri Delima here today.
Sim said the programme had three main objectives: enabling people to buy groceries and daily necessities at lower prices, providing business opportunities for traders, particularly local entrepreneurs, and bringing government agency services directly to communities.
More than 80 types of daily necessities, including fresh produce, meat, food and household cleaning products, are being offered at discounts of up to 30 per cent.
“At the same time, we also bring government agencies here so that residents do not have to go to government offices. Instead, the government offices come to their communities to provide services directly,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sim said he was proud of an initiative by a group of youths who had previously participated in his adopted-child programme to set up sales stalls to raise funds for students from underprivileged families.
He said most of them were still studying at universities, colleges and polytechnics, but had taken the initiative to help those in need.
“I am very proud of their initiative. Although they are still studying, they have taken the initiative to help other people who are struggling,” he said.
Also present was Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan, who said the KUSKOP MADANI Sales programme was the first to be held in the area and expressed hope that it would continue in the future.
She said residents also received additional RM5 discount vouchers each for purchases of goods offered at the programme.
