Melaka Must Stop Conceding Late Goals - Elavarasan

13/09/2026 11:08 AM

MELAKA, Sept 13 (Bernama) -- Melaka FC head coach E. Elavarasan wants his side to quickly address their lapses in the closing minutes after conceding another late goal in their 2-1 defeat to Kuching City FC in a Super League match at Hang Jebat Stadium, Krubong, here last night.

He said the same problem occurred in their previous match against Selangor, adding that it must be addressed immediately if Melaka are to make further progress in the league.

“We are definitely disappointed because we conceded in the final minute. This is the second time it has happened. It was the same against Selangor and now against Kuching City, so this is something we need to fix as soon as possible if we want to go far in the league,” he told a post-match press conference.

Kuching City opened the scoring through Jerome Etame in the 27th minute before Melaka drew level in second-half stoppage time through Do Donghyun, who converted a free-kick.

However, Kuching City scored again through Wanja Ronald Ngah just before the final whistle to secure a 2-1 victory.

Elavarasan said the league has become increasingly competitive this season, with every team appearing stronger, making victories all the more important for Melaka

He said even a point would have been sufficient against Kuching City, who have quality and experience after finishing runners-up in the league last season.

He said the visitors’ experience and exposure had helped them handle the pressure effectively after they were reduced to 10 men following Yuki Tanigawa’s red card in the 55th minute

Elavarasan said Melaka should have switched to a more defensive approach after levelling the score, particularly with only minutes remaining.

Kuching City head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak praised his players’ commitment in securing the win despite playing with 10 men, while maintaining their attacking approach in pursuit of victory.

He said Kuching City have little time to rest as they prepare for their debut in the AFC Champions League (ACL) in Cambodia. The victory keeps Kuching City second in the league with 12 points, while Melaka remain 10th with three points.
