SANDAKAN, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) recorded 714 complaints regarding online content in Sandakan between 2025 and August this year, with more than half involving social media.
Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee said 408 of the complaints involved social media platforms.
“These figures show that online risks can affect anyone, regardless of age, background or location. Therefore, when discussing digital development, we should not focus solely on internet access or increasingly sophisticated technology.
“We must also ensure that the public has the knowledge and skills to identify risks, make sound judgments, and protect themselves and their families while online,” she said.
She said this in the text of her speech, which was read out by Elopura Mukim Development Officer Jason Pang, at the launch of the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS) Community Carnival here today.
Vivian said it was crucial to extend the KIS initiative to the community level, including in Sandakan, to ensure that no one was left behind in benefiting from digital development safely and responsibly.
“This effort is further strengthened by the involvement of local ‘Safe Internet Heroes’ (WIS), who act as volunteers and advocacy icons within the community.
“This approach is vital because local residents better understand the realities and challenges faced by their communities, allowing internet safety messages to be conveyed in a relatable, easy-to-understand and relevant manner,” she said.
Meanwhile, according to MCMC Corporate Communications, more than 500 Sandakan residents gained knowledge of internet safety and digital skills through the KIS Carnival held at Taman Harmoni.
It said that in addition to the WIS initiative, residents were also introduced to technology through interactive and hands-on robotics activities conducted in collaboration with Science Explore Sandakan.
