JAKARTA, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysians residing in or visiting Jakarta and its surrounding areas are advised to stay calm and keep up-to-date with official information issued by local authorities, following a magnitude 6.5 earthquake that struck near the capital’s Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) early Saturday morning.
The Embassy of Malaysia in Jakarta in a statement today informed that the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami and that as of 12 noon, there have yet to be reports of accidents or damages arising from the incident.
"Overseas-bound Malaysia citizens are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, including by allocating extra funds for personal needs, in addition to getting adequately insured prior to departure,” the embassy said.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the earthquake at 4.23 am local time, with tremors felt in the Indonesian capital and in across parts of Java and Sumatra.
For consular assistance, Malaysians may contact the Embassy of Malaysia in Jakarta at its fixed line +62 21 522 4947 or WhatsApp or call +62 813 8081 3036.
