KUALA LUMPUR, 10 Sept (Bernama) --  The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), through its Digital Library unit and in collaboration with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) and the Sungai Bunus Urban Farm (KBSB), organised the "Langkahan Merdeka" programme to foster greater appreciation for the national language among Bernama staff.

DBP Language and Literature Development Department director Abang Haliman Abang Julai said the programme, now in its fourth year, was part of efforts to promote the empowerment of the national language throughout the year while raising awareness of its importance as a means of communication and a tool for fostering unity.

He said efforts to promote appreciation of the national language should not be confined to the National Language Month or other celebratory periods.

“This is a highly engaging programme as it involves staff at all levels. It also serves as a platform to foster unity.

“We hope more government agencies, the private sector and members of the public will come forward to organise language-related activities, ensuring that our heritage and national identity are preserved for future generations,” he told Bernama.

He also announced that the highlight of this year’s National Language Month celebration would be held at Padang Kota Lama, Penang, on Oct 24, with the event expected to be officiated by the Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, Bernama Digital Library senior manager Hasnita Ibrahim said programmes of this nature were aimed at fostering awareness among Bernama staff of their important role as Malaysians in contributing to the development of society and the nation.

“National Day celebrations are not merely about commemorating past victories; they also provide an opportunity for reflection and for us to draw lessons from the resilience of our independence fighters.

“We need to internalise the spirit of their struggle to achieve success, not only in our careers but also as individuals, family members and members of the community,” she said.

The programme featured several activities, including the 6,900 Steps for Independence initiative, a TikTok video creation contest, a patriotic poetry and song competition, and a book review session.
