KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) is calling for the use of safety intelligence, including artificial intelligence (AI), data and collective expertise to prevent aviation accidents and advanced the goal of zero fatalities.
CAAM chief executive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud said the aviation community must harness available resources, knowledge and expertise to identify and address safety risks before they lead to accidents.
He said safety must be a personal responsibility for everyone in the industry, particularly in the wake of the helicopter crash in Sarawak, two days ago that claimed five lives.
“Safety is very personal, especially to me, and I hope it's personal to all of you, too. We have a duty. We have a responsibility, accountability, and all the people in this room today has that,” he said in his keynote address at Malaysia Aviation Safety Seminar (MASS) 2026, here today.
Norazman said safety intelligence would allow tha aviation community to analyse vast amounts of information, including records, audit materials and safety data, beyond what methods could effectively process.
He said the MASS 2026 brought together more than 500 participants with an estimated 5,000 years of combined experience and knowledge that could be transformed into actionable intelligence to strengthen aviation safety.
Norazman said while technologies such as AI could play an important role in aviation safety, but their ultimate purpose must be to prevent the loss of life and support the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) goal of zero fatalities.
“Yes, we can call it AI or whatever intelligence, but we hope one day, with the goal of ICAO, zero fatalities, we will achieve it with what we've created with all the great minds here,” he said.
He urged all aviation stakeholders to make safety a personal commitment and keep it at the heart of their responsibilities.
“My message here is very clear, very simple, very dear to me. Make safety personal, and hold it dear, close to your heart,” he said.
