PUTRAJAYA, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is still awaiting confirmation from the Indonesian authorities before deploying assets that can be used to help tackle forest fires in the country.
Communications Minister and MADANI Government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the Cabinet was told of this matter by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra).
“NADMA and Wisma Putra informed the Cabinet that a list of assets we can provide to assist our neighbouring country has been sent (to Indonesia).
“But so far there has been no confirmation on any form of cooperation to utilise assets from Malaysia to help put out the fires and so on,” he said at a post-Cabinet meeting press conference today.
The forest fires in Indonesia were reported to have resulted in transboundary haze.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the existing ASEAN mechanism for addressing transboundary haze needed to be improved to ensure the problem could be tackled more effectively.
He said the matter needed to be given serious attention by the relevant ministers at the ASEAN level as the haze affected people's lives, particularly children and infants.
