Giant Jalur Gemilang Now Proudly Flying At Bukit Hantu Peak After Four Climbs

JITRA, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- Narrow paths, steep slopes, as well as sharp and slippery rocky surfaces were no obstacle for a group of Kampung Bukit Hantu community members to fly a giant Jalur Gemilang at the peak of Bukit Hantu here.

In fact, to realise their aspiration, they had to make the climb four times after the flagpole they were using broke after being hit by strong winds.

Kampung Bukit Hantu Community chairman Arif Fazilah Abdullah said the challenge did not dampen the residents’ spirit to carry a flag measuring 15 feet wide and 30 feet long to the peak of the 120-metre-high hill above sea level.

“Carrying the flag and its pole up was indeed difficult as the route to the peak is rocky, steep and narrow.

“We initially used a wooden pole, but it broke four times due to storms. Eventually, we used a 10-metre-long metal pole, which several residents had to carry without any specialised equipment,” he told reporters when met at Kampung Bukit Hantu, Kodiang, here today.

He said the residents’ perseverance eventually paid off when the giant Jalur Gemilang was successfully installed and flown at the peak of the hill, further instilling patriotic spirit in conjunction with the National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM) celebrations.

He said the flag was also produced through gotong-royong, with residents working together to sew and paint the Jalur Gemilang before carrying it to the peak.

Meanwhile, resident Johari Mohd Said, 65, said the tireless spirit among the younger generation was one of the main factors behind the success of the effort.

“I am grateful for the spirit shown by the young people in the Bukit Hantu area, who never gave up, and today we can see the Malaysian flag proudly standing at the peak,” he said.

Another resident, Mohd Firdaus Marzuki, 37, said the effort provided a new experience for the community as they had never before installed a flag of such a size at the peak of the hill.

“The spirit of wanting to try something new motivated us to do it. We ourselves had never installed a flag this big at the peak,” he said.

The giant Jalur Gemilang now flies proudly at the peak of Bukit Hantu, symbolising the community’s perseverance, courage and unity in fostering love for the country in conjunction with Malaysia Day.
