Malaysian Shuttlers Have Talent, But Need Greater Hunger, Says Chong Wei

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- National badminton great Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei said the national shuttlers need to show greater hunger and determination if they are to make a bigger impact on the international stage, despite having the talent to succeed.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Performance Committee Chairman said there was a stark contrast between the mentality of local players and the fighting spirit displayed by French players, particularly following the European nation's success in clinching two world titles in New Delhi last month.

“If you had asked me before, no one would have believed France could win two World Championships (titles). They proved themselves, and we must also prove how we can improve for the future.

“You can see the French players enter the court with such hunger to win. Our players have it, but maybe not enough,” he said when met recently.

French badminton has steadily strengthened its presence on the international stage by reaching a historic new milestone, winning its first world titles in men’s singles and mixed doubles on the same day.

Alex Lanier became the first French player to bag the men’s singles world title, while Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue created a sensation by securing the mixed doubles title.

The French badminton men’s team also won silver at the Thomas Cup Finals 2026 in Horsens, Denmark, in May.

When asked specifically about Malaysian top-ranked men’s singles player Leong Jun Hao, Chong Wei acknowledged the player's struggles while stressing the urgent need for a change in attitude and a stronger sense of personal desire.

The former world No. 1 said the 27-year-old has limited time left to make a significant impact on the international stage.

"I hope he knows what he needs and what he wants. He is no longer 18 or 20 years old...He doesn't have much time left and needs to know what he needs.

"He might have one last Olympic run in 2028 depending on his condition. It’s about desire," he said.

The three-time men’s singles Olympic Games silver medallist made it clear that discipline remains the ultimate cornerstone of success, reiterating that no player, regardless of talent, can reach the world level without it.
