KUANTAN, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- Various community activities not only provide opportunities for people to come together but can also strengthen unity among the people.
Deputy National Unity Minister R Yuneswaran said the strength of a community also depended on close cooperation between the people, government agencies and community leaders to ensure that every initiative implemented benefited residents.
"Programmes like this are not just for us to come and gather, but I see our community activities involving everyone from children to adults.
"This is how government agencies and community leaders prioritise the prosperity of the people," he said when speaking at the Inderapura MADANI Merdeka Semarak Programme here today.
Meanwhile, Yuneswaran said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement that the annual grant for Rukun Tetangga Areas (KRT) would be increased to RM10,000 next year from RM6,000 previously reflected the important role played by KRTs in helping local communities.
"This shows that even our country's top leaders take into account and recognise the importance of the KRT's role in our local communities. Therefore, to the KRT committee members here, let us shoulder the responsibility together to be the eyes and ears of the government to help the community," he said.
In addition, he said the spirit of mutual assistance and unity among the people, regardless of race and religion, must continue to be preserved as part of Malaysia's identity.
In this regard, he urged the community to continue safeguarding the harmony and unity that had long been established and not allow any elements to divide the people.
Earlier, Yuneswaran also inaugurated a futsal court and visited the Patin Fish Fry Community Pond managed by local residents.
The two-day programme, which began yesterday, brought together more than 1,000 local residents and people from surrounding communities who participated in various activities, including a Fun Run, decorated bicycles, colouring activities and a Merdeka alley.
