Nepalese PM Balendra Shah To Address UN General Assembly On Sept 24 - Report

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah is scheduled to address the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Sept 24, The Kathmandu Post reported, citing the UN’s official speaking schedule.

According to the country’s English daily, Shah is expected to speak in the afternoon, marking his first foreign trip since taking office on Mar 27.

His appearance at the annual gathering of world leaders comes as Nepal seeks international support following devastating floods that killed more than 1,300 people and left thousands missing.

The report said that the government had initially planned to send Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal to lead Nepal’s delegation to the General Assembly.

According to the daily, the plan was revised after the Aug 26 disaster in Nepal’s northern Himalayan region, when floods triggered by a glacial collapse and landslide swept through communities along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors.

Citing government officials, the report said Shah decided to attend in person to highlight the scale of the disaster and seek international assistance for rescue, relief and reconstruction.

The Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to begin preparations for the visit after Shah decided to lead the delegation, the Nepalese daily reported.
