GEORGE TOWN, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- The construction of the first phase of the Pan-Island Link 2A (PIL2A) highway has recorded 29.85 per cent progress as of the end of August 2026, indicating positive developments for the major infrastructure project that will provide a direct route to Silicon Island.

Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said construction works were progressing 0.42 per cent ahead of schedule, reflecting consistent implementation momentum resulting from the collaboration between the state government, project developers and contractors.

“At the construction site, the construction of the substructure such as pile caps and pillars is currently underway in the marine and onshore areas of Permatang Damar Laut.

“For the superstructure construction works, this project requires 260 units of T-beams and as of August 31, 2026, 25 units of T-beams have been completed and the casting process has been completed,” he said in a statement today.

With a total contract value of RM420 million, the first phase involves the construction of a 1.5 km long road and marine bridge that connects the intersection at Jalan Permatang Damar Laut directly to Silocon Island with a marine bridge design using a Balanced Cantilever Beam type structure.

Zairil said the opening of PIL2A would be implemented in stages, starting with the main component, namely the first section of the marine bridge which is expected to be completed and opened to the public in December 2028, followed by the full completion of the entire PIL2A project in June 2029.

He stressed that the aspects of site safety, operational control and environmental management would continue to be given priority to ensure that the project was implemented in accordance with the set standards and practices.
