02/09/2026 12:39 AM

LONDON, Sept 1 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Tuesday that he would stand down as Member of Parliament (MP) for Holborn and St Pancras, reported Xinhua.

“Now is the right time to step down as MP for Holborn and St Pancras and hand the baton over to a successor,” Starmer said in a statement on Tuesday.

He added he will focus on “international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast changing world.”

Starmer’s move will trigger a by-election in the London seat. “Whoever is lucky enough to become the Labour candidate here will have my full support and backing, Starmer said.

Starmer announced his resignation as leader of the governing Labour Party in June.

In July, Andy Burnham was confirmed as the leader of the Labour Party and took office as British prime minister.
