SUKIPT 2026: Jing Xuan Smashes Meet Record On Meaningful National Day

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 (Bernama) -- National women's javelin thrower Ng Jing Xuan presented a meaningful "gold nugget" to Sunway University in conjunction with the National Day celebration by successfully breaking the 2026 Higher Education Institutions Sports Games (SUKIPT) meet record at the UM Arena, Universiti Malaya, today.

The 22-year-old athlete recorded a throw of 46.92 meters (m) in the final event, erasing the old record of 44.41m held by Nur Fatin Adibah Suharman from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) set during the 2016 edition.

While happy with her gold medal success, Jing Xuan admitted feeling slightly disappointed because her main mission to break her own national record of 52.17m was not achieved during this appearance.

"Actually, for SUKIPT this time, my target was just like usual - to do my best. It's just that I had a target for the national record, but today luck wasn't on my side to get it. However, I managed to set a SUKIPT record. So I am still grateful to have broken the SUKIPT record," she said when met after the event here today.

She added that she underwent a month of intensive training right after returning from participating in the Asian U23 Athletics Championships as preparation for these games.

"So when I didn't get the result I felt I could achieve, I was a bit disappointed, but we accept this result," she said, having hoped for a greater distance based on her previous training sessions.

She explained that a last-minute schedule change from the afternoon session to the morning session also slightly affected the rhythm of her throws, which felt a bit sluggish.

In line with the Merdeka Day spirit, Jing Xuan is now determined to stay focused on preparations for the ASEAN University Games (AUG) this December and next year's SEA Games to bring glory to Malaysia on the international stage.

Earlier, she left other competitors far behind, with the silver medal won by Farisha Athirah Wai from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) with a throw of 36.21 meters (m), while Tai Yu Tian from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) took the bronze (32.74m).
