KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- A 91.44-metre Bailey bridge across Sungai Kaiduan in Papar, Sabah, has been completed, restoring road access to five villages and benefiting nearly 1,000 residents.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the bridge, which can support loads of up to 20 tonnes, was installed to replace the original structure that collapsed during flooding on Sept 13 last year.
The collapse disrupted transport links for residents in the affected villages.
Following the incident, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, directed that the Bailey bridge be installed without delay and personally visited the site on Sept 18.
"For me, when people's access is cut off by a disaster, restoration work must be carried out as quickly as possible because it affects the daily affairs, movement and lives of local communities," he said in a Facebook post today.
"God willing, restoration efforts such as this will continue to receive attention so that damaged facilities can be restored and people's lives can return to normal," he said.
