Independence Must Be Fulfilled Through Quality Work, Integrity - UniMAP VC

ARAU, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- Independence should not be seen merely as a legacy to enjoy but as a trust to fulfil through quality work, integrity, and dedication in duties.

Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Zaliman Sauli said today's struggle to honour independence must be translated into work, especially efforts to keep the institution strong, principled, resilient, and relevant to the nation’s needs.

"In the workplace context, independence signifies the courage to rectify weaknesses, abandon ineffective practices, innovate new solutions, and defend what is right.

"Work culture must shift from simply questioning whether a task falls within one's scope of responsibility to focusing on the larger picture and what can be done to improve university operations," he said in a statement today.

He reminded the UniMAP community that patriotism should not be limited to flying the Jalur Gemilang but should also be reflected in how every member performs their duties.

"Do not just fly the Jalur Gemilang on university buildings. Show the spirit of independence through how we work. Let independence inspire us to deliver quality work, administer with integrity, and serve with sincerity," he said.

Furthermore, Zaliman urged the Chancellery staff not to see daily tasks as routine but to treat every duty as a trust impacting the university's excellence.

He also called on the Chancellery workforce to foster a culture of integrity, professionalism, and efficiency and to seek opportunities to improve workflow and service delivery.

"As the administrative nerve centre of the university, the Chancellery brings together top leadership and staff across various roles and tiers, all sharing a unified trust to ensure UniMAP moves forward and delivers its best to the nation.

"While past generations fought to liberate our homeland, our struggle today is to ensure the institution we inherited remains solid, principled, resilient, and relevant to the needs of the country," he said.

Zaliman added that UniMAP's administrative strength relies not only on top leadership but also on every individual carrying out their responsibilities with dedication, working as one team toward a single goal to empower UniMAP.
