DUNGUN, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- A housewife has taken the initiative to decorate the compound of her home with the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of her love for the country in conjunction with the 2026 National Day celebration on Aug 31.
Kitam Mat Deris, 55, from Block C, Taman Madani, Bandar Al-Muktafi Billah Shah near here, said she began putting up and decorating the front compound of her home with Jalur Gemilang flags of various sizes early this month to enliven the Merdeka atmosphere.
She said the effort was aimed at creating a festive National Day atmosphere while also instilling patriotic spirit among residents, particularly the young generation.
“Although I am already 55, I still want to do something to show my love for the country. The Jalur Gemilang decorations may seem simple, but I hope they can help foster the spirit of independence,” she told Bernama when met at her home here today.
Kitam said her husband, Che Musa Ismail, 74, and their daughter, Murni Safiqah Che Musa, 32, also helped and contributed ideas in decorating their home.
She said most of the Jalur Gemilang flags and decorative items used to brighten up her home were purchased online to save both money and time.
“So far, I have spent more than RM500 on Jalur Gemilang flags and various decorative items. However, for me, it is not about the amount of money spent, but rather the spirit and love for the country that matter most,” she said.
Kitam said her home was also selected to represent Block C in a beautification competition held in conjunction with the 2026 National Day celebration, organised by the Central Terengganu Development Authority (KETENGAH).
“This selection has further motivated me to ensure that the house looks cheerful and reflects the festive atmosphere of the National Day celebration,” she said.
Apart from decorating her home with the Jalur Gemilang, Kitam also spends her free time gardening, growing various ornamental plants and herbs in the compound of her house.
