Singapore Works With Nepal, China To Assist Flood-Affected Citizens

SINGAPORE, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- Singapore is working with Nepali and Chinese authorities to assist its citizens affected by deadly flash floods near the Nepal-China border, with media reports saying two Singaporeans are believed to be among 47 hikers missing in northern Nepal.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in a Facebook post on Thursday said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) was in close contact with relevant authorities to render consular assistance to affected Singaporeans and was also in touch with their next of kin.

"Deeply saddened by the loss of lives and devastation caused by the floods along the Nepal-China border.

"Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal and China during this difficult time, and with the authorities and emergency personnel working tirelessly on rescue and recovery efforts," he said, extending condolences to the families who lost loved ones and all those affected by the tragedy.

According to media reports, two Singaporeans are believed to be among a group of 47 hikers missing after the deadly flash floods hit northern Nepal.

Himalayan Glacier Adventures founder and chief executive Sagar Pandey said the group also included hikers from Australia, Nepal, the United Kingdom, the United States and Russia.

Meanwhile, MFA in an advisory said Singaporeans in Nepal should exercise a high degree of caution, remain vigilant, monitor local news and follow the instructions of local authorities.

It advised Singaporeans to avoid flood-affected areas in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan, and to stay away from rivers, riverbanks, bridges and low-lying areas.

"There may be disruptions to roads, transport, communications and essential services in affected areas. Please check local road and weather conditions before undertaking journeys," it said.
