IPOH, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- In the midst of losing a loved one, a family in Ipoh made the difficult decision to donate his organs, giving hope to patients waiting for a chance at a new lease on life.
The family of a 64-year-old man who died while receiving treatment at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here gave their consent for organ donation after being approached by teams from the hospital’s Emergency and Trauma Department and Neurosurgery Department.
HRPB said the family graciously agreed to the donation after receiving an explanation and understanding the process involved, with a kidney and eye tissue subsequently identified for donation following assessment and coordination.
“Amid the grief of losing a loved one, the family chose to give other patients a chance to continue living.
“This selfless decision not only gives meaning to their loss, but also offers renewed hope to those who are waiting,” the hospital said in a Facebook post today.
The organ retrieval process took more than six hours, with the kidney retrieval procedure alone taking almost four hours before the eye tissue was retrieved.
HRPB said the lengthy process reflected the care, patience and commitment of the teams involved in ensuring that suitable organs and tissues could be donated to those waiting for transplants.
It said the process was coordinated by the HRPB Organ Procurement Unit (UPOH), together with the clinical and support teams involved, to ensure the donation process was carried out smoothly.
HRPB extended its condolences to the donor’s family and expressed its highest appreciation for their selflessness and strength in making what it described as a deeply significant decision.
The hospital also thanked the National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC), as well as the urology teams from Selayang Hospital, Kuala Lumpur Hospital and Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, for their role in the process.
