KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- A new sensory-safe indoor gym in Taman Desa here is offering families in Malaysia an inclusive space where children of all abilities can move, play and develop alongside their siblings and friends.
We Rock the Spectrum (WRTS) Kid’s Gym Taman Desa, which officially opened its doors today, is designed to provide a safe and controlled environment for children, including those with autism and other sensory and developmental needs.
Located at G1, Wisma Miramas, Jalan Klang Lama here, the facility features 12 pieces of therapeutic equipment that support physical movement, sensory development and social interaction.
“Using many of the equipment provides vestibular and proprioceptive input while encouraging upper-body and core strength,” it said.
The Malaysia outlet is owned by Nori Abdullah and her family, who were inspired to bring the WRTS concept to Kuala Lumpur after discovering the gym in Los Angeles, United States, while looking for suitable family activities for their three sons.
Nori’s second son, Timor, is autistic, and her experience as a mother led her to recognise the need for a dedicated space where children with different sensory and developmental needs could participate in activities alongside their siblings and friends.
WRTS Kid’s Gym Taman Desa aims to give families greater flexibility to allow their children to explore, move and play at their own pace in a welcoming environment.
The importance of physical activity for neurodivergent children is also recognised internationally, with the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom noting that exercise can help children regulate emotions, improve focus, reduce hyperactivity, boost mood and self-esteem, and cope when they feel overstimulated or overwhelmed.
Founded by Dina Kimmel, WRTS opened its first gym in Tarzana, California, after her son was diagnosed with autism and she struggled to find a safe space where both her son and daughter could play together.
The franchise now has more than 100 locations across 35 states in the United States and eight countries worldwide.
At today’s grand opening, children of all abilities were invited to experience the facility’s specialised equipment, including a trampoline, swings and Zip Slider. Admission is RM48 per child.
