MOSCOW, Aug 23 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Canada expects to enjoy the benefits of being a US state without actually becoming one, while accusing Ottawa of imposing tariffs on US farmers for years.
"Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!! They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!" Trump said on Truth Social, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer previously said that Canada had refused to finalise a trade deal with Washington. According to the US official, tariffs on a number of Canadian goods took effect at 12:01 am Eastern Time (4:01 GMT) on August 22.
The United States has 50 states, and Trump has repeatedly advocated for Canada to join the US, at times suggesting it could become the 51st state. He has also floated Greenland and Venezuela as potential candidates for the 51st state.
