MFL Approves Five Additional Local Player Quota Places For 2026/27 Season

21/08/2026 06:09 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Football League (MFL) Board of Directors today approved an additional five registration quota places for local players for all clubs competing in the 2026–2027 Malaysia League season.

The decision increases the maximum number of players that each club can register from 33 to 38, comprising up to 23 local players and 15 foreign players.

“However, the foreign player quota remains unchanged at 15 players, in line with the existing regulations,” MFL said in a statement.

The five additional quota places are exclusively for local players and remain subject to the requirements of the Financial Fair Play (FFP) mechanism.

MFL said the decision followed applications from Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and Kuching City FC, who face congested schedules while competing in the AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE), AFC Champions League 2 (ACL2), ASEAN Club Championship (Shopee Cup) and domestic competitions.

The MFL Board also viewed the additional quota as an opportunity to provide more openings for local players who remain without contracts, as well as players from the former President’s Cup and Youth Cup squads who have exceeded the age limit and are eligible for registration with senior teams.

“With the addition of these player quota places, it will also help JDT and Kuching City FC, who will represent the country in the AFC club competitions, perform more competitively to improve the country’s ranking points and pursue titles on the Southeast Asian stage,” the statement said.

MFL said although the maximum squad size had been increased to 38 players, clubs were not required to fill all the available places.

“Player registration is subject to the club’s needs, financial capability and compliance with the FFP mechanism, including the implementation of an 80 per cent Salary Cap for the 2026–2027 season, while the minimum number of players registered by each club remains at 20,” it said.

The first player registration window for the 2026–2027 Malaysia League will close on Sept 3.
