MOSCOW, Aug 21 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The United States (US) and Jamaica have signed an agreement to strengthen military and strategic cooperation between the two countries in the fight against narco-terrorism in the Western Hemisphere, Sputnik/RIA Novosti reported, citing US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).
"Alongside our Jamaican partners, we are capitalizing on a decades-long history of security cooperation to strengthen our front against cartels and expand our joint efforts to combat threats in the Western Hemisphere," SOUTHCOM said on X, citing Commander General Francis L. Donovan.
The agreement builds on an agreement reached in August in Panama at the A3C anti-cartel forum between Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Jamaica's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Horace Chang.
In November 2025, Hegseth announced the launch of Operation Southern Spear targeting drug cartels in Latin America.
Since September 2025, the US military has struck at least 67 vessels in strikes against suspected drug smugglers in the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean, killing 221 people, according to SOUTHCOM.
