Operational Excellence Key To ASEAN’s Energy Transition -- TNB

21/08/2026 12:55 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) — Operational excellence must go beyond cost efficiency to strengthen grid resilience, enhance real-time system visibility and support the safe and reliable integration of renewable energy as ASEAN’s energy landscape continues to evolve.

Speaking at the 3rd ASEAN Operational Excellence Summit 2026 (OPEX 2026), Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) chief strategy and ventures officer Dr Mohd Fadzil Mohd Siamhe said the increasing interconnection of power systems and accelerating energy transition require utilities to build greater agility in responding to a rapidly changing operating environment.

“Operational excellence must go beyond cost efficiency. It is about strengthening grid resilience, enhancing real-time system visibility, integrating renewable energy safely and reliably, and building the agility to respond effectively to an increasingly dynamic operating environment,” he said.

For TNB, he said transformation is driven by the integration of data, digital technologies and advanced analytics into everyday grid operations.

“Continued investments in network modernisation, predictive asset management and enhanced incident response capabilities enable TNB to improve reliability, minimise service disruptions and deliver secure, resilient electricity supply to the communities and economies it serves,” he said.

Equally important is investing in people, he said, adding that while technology is a key enabler, operational excellence ultimately depends on a skilled and future-ready workforce.

“TNB continues to strengthen technical capabilities through continuous upskilling, digital enablement and a strong culture of safety, innovation and continuous improvement.”

Mohd Fadzil also underscored that ASEAN's energy future will be shaped not only by technological advancement, but by stronger regional collaboration.

“Through knowledge sharing, operational benchmarking and deeper partnerships among ASEAN utilities, TNB remains committed to advancing a more resilient, sustainable and interconnected regional power system that supports long-term energy security and shared prosperity.”

The third OPEX 2026, held in Kuala Lumpur recently, brought together regional utilities and industry leaders to exchange insights and best practices on strengthening operational performance amid the region’s rapidly changing energy landscape.
