DHAKA, Aug 20 (Bernama-dpa) -- Bangladesh's presidential election is scheduled for Thursday, with lawmakers set to begin voting at 2 pm (0800 GMT) and polling closing at 5 pm, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
The election was called earlier this month following the resignation of former president Mohammed Shahabuddin on health grounds on July 24.
Under Bangladesh's parliamentary system, the presidency is largely a ceremonial position, with executive power resting with the prime minister.
Two candidates have filed nomination papers for the country's highest office.
The ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has nominated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who is widely expected to become the next president, as the BNP holds more than a two-thirds majority in parliament.
The opposition, led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has nominated Oli Ahmed, a retired army officer turned politician.
