KAZAN, Russia, Aug 19 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Chinese shipping company NewNew Shipping plans to build an icebreaker together with Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom in 2027 that will be capable of year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route, New New Shipping CEO Ke Jin told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
"Our joint venture with Rosatom plans to build an Arc7-class icebreaker next year. This vessel will be able to navigate the Northern Sea Route year-round," the company’s CEO said.
The project has already received support from many departments of the Chinese government, he said.
"We believe that the construction of this vessel could begin next year, including the design phase, which is essentially complete," Ke Jin said.
The CEO added that the company hoped to receive financial support for the implementation of the project in early 2027.
In 2024, Rosatom Arctic and New New Shipping signed a letter of intent to organise a year-round container line between Russia and China using the waters of the Northern Sea Route. A joint venture has been established for this purpose, which will be responsible for the design and construction of high-ice-class container ships.
