UK Police To Use AI To Filter Hoax Calls

19/08/2026 12:05 PM

LONDON, Aug 19 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The United Kingdom (UK) police will use artificial intelligence (AI) software to filter hoax calls to the 101 number, which handles non-emergency calls, the Home Office said in a statement, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

“New AI software will slash waiting times for reporting crimes to the police, helping to unclog the 101 service amid huge levels of misdirected, nuisance and prank calls,” the statement said.

The AI will match the nature of incoming calls with the services best placed to handle them.

Authorities expect the initiative to save police up to £8.5 million (US$11.5 million) per year.

Approximately 20 per cent of the 20 million annual calls to 101 are hoaxes.

The line also receives complaints about issues such as delayed pizza deliveries, slow service in pubs and requests for rides, the report said.
