Kelantan’s 5G Coverage reaches 87 Pct, Exceeds 2026 National Target 

KOTA BHARU, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- 5G network coverage in populated areas in Kelantan has reached about 87 per cent this year, exceeding the national target of 80 per cent set for 2026.

State Education, Higher Education, Green Technology, Digital and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Wan Roslan Wan Hamat said the achievement was in line with the government’s aspirations to provide high-speed and affordable internet access to the people and the business sector.

He said the Federal Government had also allocated funds to expand digital infrastructure, including RM770 million for the remaining Point of Presence (POP) Phase 2 sites near industrial areas and selected schools in rural and remote areas.

“The government has also allocated RM780 million for JENDELA 2 (Phase 2 of the National Digital Network Plan) to cover 2,700 new locations. We must ensure these projects truly benefit areas in need,” he said during the launch of the Kelantan 5G Empowerment Seminar and 5G, Digital, Science and Technology Exhibition here today.

Wan Roslan said the state government would ensure rural and interior areas, industrial zones, educational centres, tourism areas and economic growth centres also benefitted from mprovements in digital infrastructure.

He said the development of 5G needed to take into account Kelantan’s geographical conditions, population distribution and economic structure to ensure the facilities could be utilised comprehensively.

“We do not want there to be a gap between urban and rural communities, with children in interior areas falling behind in digital education, small entrepreneurs in districts missing out on opportunities to use technology to expand their businesses, and a lack of digital infrastructure becoming a factor that limits investment in the state,” he said.
