KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Proposed amendments to the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 are now at the final stage and are expected to be tabled in the upcoming Parliament session, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He said the amendments aimed to strengthen and improve the existing provisions to further empower the country’s engineering profession.
“Various proposals and engagement sessions have been carried out, while issues deemed important have also been included in the proposed amendments. We are using this opportunity to further improve the content of the Act,” he said.
He said this at a press conference after officiating the National Engineering Convention (NEC) 2026 here today, which was also attended by Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) president Datuk Ibrahim Esa.
In his speech, Nanta proposed amendments to the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 aimed at strengthening BEM’s regulatory and enforcement powers.
“The proposed amendments are undergoing the necessary approval process, including consideration by the relevant departments. This is not regulation for regulation’s sake alone.
“It is about public safety, professional accountability and ensuring that engineering work is undertaken by people who are properly qualified to shoulder the responsibility,” he said.
On strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), he said the government placed strong emphasis on the sector to produce a highly skilled local workforce, particularly to meet the needs of the country’s construction industry.
Nanta said that his ministry, through the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), also provided TVET programmes through Akademi Binaan Malaysia, in addition to various programmes implemented by other ministries, including the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA).
In a related development, Nanta said Malaysia would send a contingent to the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China, this September, led by Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
NEC2026, themed ‘Engineering with Integrity in the Digital Age’, brought together more than 2,000 participants from eight countries, including Thailand and Saudi Arabia.
The convention served as a platform for members of the community to exchange views and discuss challenges and opportunities that would shape the future of the field, while playing a strategic role in the country’s development based on responsibility and integrity.
