DFP To Host Powerhouse Cultural Showcase Celebrating Malaysian-Chinese Heritage

18/08/2026 10:26 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The story of Malaysian-Chinese heritage, from migration and settlement to the evolution of traditions on Malaysian soil, will take centre stage at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) through 'A Dance Spectacular' on Sept 5.

The nearly two-hour performance on Saturday at 8 pm, featuring a collaboration between ASK Dance Company and Dua Space Dance Theatre, will explore themes of heritage, identity and resilience through contemporary interpretations of traditional Chinese dance, live music and visual imagery.

The performance is part of DFP's efforts to promote cultural diversity while providing a platform for Malaysian performing arts groups to reinterpret traditional heritage within a contemporary setting.

Opening the evening, ASK Dance Company will present 'Pearl of the Orient', a vibrant production depicting the movement of Chinese traditions to Malaya and their evolution into an uniquely Malaysian expression.

ASK Dance Company Founder Prof Dr Joseph Gonzales said the production uses dance to portray migration, assimilation, and how early settlers helped shape the nation's diverse fabric.

“It's not really a narrative that you will see, but you will understand that the journey begins in China and the Chinese come to Malaysia, and in Malaysia they develop their own traditions, cultures, and customs that are unique to Malaysian Chinese,” he told reporters at the DFP here today.

He said the production also incorporates references to significant chapters in Malaysian history, including the tin-mining era alongside familiar cultural icons such as mahjong and festive celebrations, all set to live music by hand percussion instruments.

“The feeling is really a celebration of our Chinese-ness in Malaysia and Chinese being a part of the national identity and part of the national narrative; I think that's very important,” he said.

Featuring approximately 17 dancers, ASK's segment will enthral viewers with a lineup of spellbinding works including the Spirit of the Fire Horse, Dai Dance, Sword Dance, Tin Mining Dance, Mahjong Dance, and a festive Lion and Chopstick Dance finale.

Following the intermission, Dua Space Dance Theatre takes centre stage with 'Passage Into The Unknown: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind', presented by 10 dancers, exploring human resilience and ancestral philosophy through the four natural elements.

Dua Space Dance Theatre founder and choreographer Anthony Meh Kim Chuan described the collaboration as a landmark opportunity to bring full-time local dance companies together under one prestigious roof.

“Everyone knows that running a full-time dance company is quite difficult in Malaysia, so we are very thankful to the organiser for giving us this fantastic opportunity to be able to perform here,” he said.

Blending traditional Chinese dance aesthetics with expressive contemporary movement, Dua Space’s performance integrates emotive choreography alongside live vocalists and instrumentalists to deliver a poetic reflection on courage and harmony.

To make this cultural experience accessible to all, DFP is offering a 20 per cent Family Package discount upon purchasing six tickets in the Premium and A Reserve categories.

Tickets are priced from RM69 to RM249 and can be purchased via telephone at 03-23317007, email at boxoffice@dfp.com.my, or online at dfp.com.my.
