SUKMA 2026: Muhammad Sayyid Finds Golden Range In 400m After Injury Layoff

SERDANG, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Two years after winning the men’s 200 metres (m) title at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Sarawak, Penang’s Muhammad Sayyid Amin Roslan showed another side of his sprinting ability by striking gold in the 400m at the Selangor 2026 edition here, today.

Muhammad Sayyid powered home in 47.20 seconds (s) at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Sports Centre, shaving 0.48s off his previous personal best of 47.68s despite only returning to the track last week after being sidelined for three months with hamstring injuries on both legs.

He said he chose to take on the 400m as the event suited his current condition and the endurance work he had been doing in training, while also prioritising his recovery in the hope of returning stronger and reaching an even higher level than before.

“For me, this was a very good comeback because three months ago, I injured both of my hamstrings and only returned to the track for my first session last week, so this result was very surprising for me.

“It’s not that I wasn’t ready to compete in the 200m but I knew which race was better for me at the moment, so I chose the 400m. I’ve been doing some endurance training and that gave me a lot of confidence to take part in the 400m,” said the 19-year-old said after the race.

Selangor’s Muhammad Daniel Haqiem took silver in 47.61s, while Muhammad Farhan Mohd Isrulnizam of Penang settled for bronze after clocking 47.66s.

The Games record of 46.78s was set by national 400m ace Umar Osman of Johor at the previous edition in Sarawak, while the national record of 45.73s is also held by Umar.

Meanwhile, Johor’s Nor Malisya Mohd Ishak claimed the women’s 400m gold after clocking 55.93s.

Terengganu’s Nor Aliya Najihah Muda took silver in 56.76s, while Sarawak’s Ormilla Octavia Codday Nyadau completed the podium with bronze in 57.03s.
