Amir Daniel Embraces Different Pressure As Coach, Eyes Asian Games

SHAH ALAM, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Embracing a different kind of pressure away from the heat of competition, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Amir Daniel Abdul Majeed admits that guiding a team from the sidelines is far more nerve-wracking than competing on the mat.

The 21-year-old national exponent, who is currently serving as assistant coach of the Penang judo squad at SUKMA Selangor 2026, said that the transition from athlete to mentor has brought a different kind of pressure.

“I feel more nervous because I have watched these athletes grow since they were young. I used to compete alongside them, but now I am their coach.

“The pressure is different, previously, I only had to look after myself during a bout. Now, I have to manage 13 people. It is a heavier responsibility, but seeing their progress is incredibly rewarding,” he said when met at the IDCC Ideal Convention Centre, yesterday. 

His contribution proved vital as the Penang judo team wrapped up their three-day campaign yesterday with three gold, one silver and five bronze medals.

The performance saw Penang finish joint-top with Johor in the medal tally.

Beyond his coaching role, the judoka is awaiting official confirmation for his participation in the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games in Japan,  with the selection meeting scheduled for this week.

Acknowledging the quality of competition in Japan, Amir sees the opportunity as valuable exposure towards his long-term Olympic ambitions and preparations for the SEA Games Malaysia 2027.

“ The level of competition there is much higher, so I am hoping to get as many fights as possible to build towards my Olympic dream,” he said.
