TRIPOLI, Aug 16 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- An explosion near the Zawiya power station in western Libya caused widespread blackouts across the capital Tripoli and surrounding regions on Saturday, the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) said, adding that power restoration was underway, reported Xinhua.
The blast near the Zawiya power station knocked several generation plants offline, disrupting the electricity grid. GECOL noted that specialised technical teams have been deployed to investigate the cause of the explosion and restore stability to the grid.
GECOL confirmed that electricity supply would gradually return to the remaining affected areas, with normal grid operations expected to resume shortly. The company apologised to citizens for any power outages or disruptions.
