PBPM Seeks Monthly Aid For Non-pensionable Former Personnel

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) --  The Malaysian Ex-Police Association (PBPM) has appealed to the government to consider providing a monthly cost-of-living allowance to non-pensionable former police personnel in recognition of their service and sacrifices to the country.

Its president, Mokhtar Omar, said that based on records dating back to 1972, about 40,000 of the association's 86,000 registered members are non-pensionable former police personnel, including those who served in the Special Squad, Home Guard and as contract inspectors during the Emergency.

He said the group deserved greater attention, particularly as many were now facing financial difficulties amid rising living costs after losing their regular sources of income.

"These individuals served during the Emergency and helped safeguard national security. There are now only a small number of them left, and the government would not be overly burdened by assisting in their welfare," he told a press conference here today.

Mokhtar said the association had also proposed a monthly special allowance of between RM300 and RM500 for recipients of the Pingat Jasa Pahlawan Negara (PJPN), in recognition of their contributions and service to the country.

He also called for a review of the Police Heritage Trust Fund (TAWP) to increase assistance rates and expand the scope of welfare support, including aid for education, healthcare and disaster relief.

Meanwhile, PBPM Information Chief Datuk Dr Basant Singh Sidhu said the association would organise a fundraising dinner in October to raise funds for former police personnel in need.

He said the event aims to raise RM1 million through contributions from the corporate sector, multinational companies, private organisations and individuals concerned about the welfare of former police personnel.

"The proceeds will be used to assist association members in need, including by providing medical equipment, wheelchairs, milk, hearing aids and other essential items," he said.
