Hospital Labuan's RM13.16 Mln Medical Gas Upgrade Completed

LABUAN, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- The RM13.157 million Medical Gas System Upgrade Project at Hospital Labuan has been completed, strengthening the hospital’s critical support infrastructure and enhancing the safety, efficiency, and continuity of healthcare services on this duty-free island.

Labuan Public Works Department (JKR) director Mohd Faizul Ali Hanapiah said the design-and-build project commenced on May 4, 2023 and was completed in June this year.

He said that the project involved the installation of a new Vacuum Insulated Evaporator (VIE) tank, upgrading of the medical gas piping system, bed head terminal units, and Uninterruptible Power Supply/Isolated Power Supply (UPS/IPS) systems.

“The upgraded systems will ensure a stable, continuous and safe power supply to critical hospital equipment, particularly during electricity disruptions,” he said at the project handover ceremony here today.

Mohd Faizul said the project was implemented while Hospital Labuan remained fully operational.

“Work had to be carried out in phases because the hospital has only two operating theatres, and at least one had to remain functional at all times, especially for emergency cases,” he said.

The project covered the main hospital building, paediatric wards, patient wards and several other blocks.

Mohd Faizul said the implementation required meticulous planning, technical expertise, and close coordination to ensure construction activities did not disrupt hospital operations or compromise patient safety.

“Delivery is not merely about completing a project on schedule. It is about ensuring that what we build functions properly, is safe to use and benefits the people,” he said.

He also said the completion of the project reflected JKR’s commitment to delivering quality public infrastructure in line with its principle, “Delivery is Our Priority”.

He added that the upgraded facilities are expected to provide long-term benefits to Hospital Labuan and support healthcare services in Labuan at an optimal level.

Meanwhile, Hospital Labuan director Dr Adnan Musa Balidran said the completion of the project was in line with efforts to equip the hospital with the facilities needed to provide better healthcare services to the people of Labuan.

He said the upgraded medical gas system would help the hospital manage oxygen consumption for patients more efficiently and improve time management for medical staff.

“Any shortage of oxygen supply for patients can now be addressed more effectively with the upgraded system,” he said.

Dr Adnan also said that the installation of an additional generator, which complements the existing power supply system, would help ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the hospital.

“This is crucial in supporting critical medical equipment and maintaining hospital operations, particularly during power disruptions,” he added.
