MOSCOW, Aug 11 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The European Union (EU) will mobilise its satellite service Copernicus to help Colombia in its rescue operations after a powerful earthquake, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Tuesday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
“The EU has mobilised Copernicus, our satellite service, to support rescue and relief operations. We are providing funding to support the response, including through the Red Cross,” Kallas said on the social media paltform X.
Brussels has also activated its crisis consular assistance mechanism to support EU citizens affected by the disaster, Kallas added.
The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck on Monday morning. Its epicentre was located near the municipality of San Jose del Palmar in the Choco department.
The tremors were felt across much of Colombia, as well as in neighbouring countries. The death toll has reached 132 people, with more than 570 others injured todate.
