KUCHING, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- Sarawak are targeting at least 75 gold medals at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor, with the aim of retaining the overall champions title.
Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the target was based on an analysis of the state contingent’s capabilities, with the number believed to be sufficient for Sarawak to emerge champion.
“We have conducted an analysis and if we can win 75 gold medals, God willing, we can become champions. If we win more than that, even better.
“There is no specific gold medal target set according to individual sports... I hope every sport contested by the Sarawak contingent can contribute a gold medal, including in events that are not expected to produce golds,” he told reporters after the Sarawak contingent flag handover ceremony for SUKMA 2026 here today.
Meanwhile, Abdul Karim said the state government would consider providing incentives to athletes who win gold medals after the Games, although the amount has yet to be decided.
