2026 ASEAN Cup: Harimau Malaya Beat Laos 4-0 For Second Group Win

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia kept up their good run in the 2026 ASEAN Cup by beating Laos 4-0 in their second Group B match at Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras here tonight.

While Malaysia dominated the first half, Laos had several good attempts at goal, with Malaysian goalkeeper Muhammad Azri Ab Ghani performing well in several occasions to deny the visitors the opening goal they strove so hard for.

The home team also had their opportunities in the first half, building up to the last minute when winger G Pavithran passed the ball from the left to team captain Paulo Josue who then comfortably tucked the ball in for the first goal of the match.

Keeper Muhammad Azri was once again tested early in the second half, denying Laotian substitute Chony Wenpaserth’s attempt at goal, and the home team managed to double their lead thanks to Pavithran’s pass from left of the field that found midfielder Endrick Dos Santos, who then scored Malaysia’s second goal in the 57th minute.

The match then went 3-0 in Malaysia’s favour nine minutes later, thanks to an own goal scored by Laotian defender Viengay Sitdavong as he tried to clear a kick by Malaysian winger Mohamadou Sumareh, and United States-based Wan Ahmad Kuzain Wan Ahmad Kamal scored Malaysia’s final goal through a free kick in the 84th minute.

Malaysia now leads Group B with six points, ahead of Thailand and Myanmar, each tied with three points, and the Philippines and Laos, both without any points. Only the top two teams of each group qualify to the semi-finals.

Malaysia will travel to Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok to take on seven-time champions Thailand this Saturday.
