Smoke Over New York Disrupts Sheinbaum's Travel To World Cup Final

NEW YORK, july 19 (Bernama-dpa) -- Poor air quality and weather conditions in New York disrupted Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum's travel plans for Sunday's Argentina-Spain World Cup final, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

Sheinbaum's flight from Cancún to New York was initially delayed by two hours on Saturday before being cancelled altogether due to smoke over New York caused by wildfires in Canada in recent days.

According to the Mexican government, the president instead flew to New York overnight into Sunday aboard an aircraft operated by Mexico's Defence Ministry.

Sheinbaum had earlier received a surprise invitation from US President Donald Trump to attend the final in East Rutherford, New Jersey. She will attend alongside the leader of the third World Cup host nation, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Relations between Mexico and the United States are strained due to trade and security issues. So far, Sheinbaum has met Trump just once in connection with the World Cup -- during the draw in Washington last December.
