GEORGE TOWN, July 9 (Bernama) -- Penang accounts for 45 per cent of Malaysia's total medical tourism revenue until today, cementing its position as the country's leading medical tourism destination, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

He said the state welcomed more than 500,000 international patients in 2025, generating over RM1.1 billion in medical tourism revenue, reflecting sustained growth driven by strong collaboration between the public and private healthcare sectors.

"This achievement reflects years of investment by both the public and private sectors, the professionalism of our healthcare workers, and the confidence patients have in Penang's healthcare system," he said in his speech during his first visit to the Northern Heart Hospital Penang here today.

Also present were the hospital's chief executive officer Kelen Leong Choy Fun and general manager Katrina Felix.

Chow said Malaysia was well-positioned to further expand its presence in the global medical tourism industry as demand for quality and affordable healthcare continued to rise worldwide.

He said the country's high clinical standards, modern healthcare facilities, and skilled medical professionals gave it a competitive edge in attracting international patients.

"However, the opportunity is not merely to attract more patients, but to develop higher-value healthcare services that create broader economic benefits for the country and improve our people's wellbeing," he said.

Meanwhile, Chow said the Penang government would continue to work closely with private healthcare providers to strengthen the state's medical ecosystem and ensure the industry's growth translated into tangible benefits for the local community.

He also said this included creating more high-quality jobs, supporting local businesses, attracting investments in healthcare innovation, and enhancing healthcare services for Penangites.

He urged the Northern Heart Hospital to continue investing in advanced medical technology, clinical excellence, and community outreach initiatives to further strengthen Penang's position as a regional healthcare hub.

"Malaysia is well-positioned to further expand its presence in the global medical tourism industry as demand for quality and affordable healthcare continues to rise worldwide," he added.

Penang has consistently been Malaysia's top medical tourism destination, supported by internationally accredited hospitals, experienced medical specialists and a well-established healthcare ecosystem, making the state a preferred choice for patients from across the region.
