KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 (Bernama) -- The government's upcoming MediAsas pilot programme is set to accelerate long-overdue reform of Malaysia's health financing system, addressing not just spiralling costs, but the structural weaknesses behind them.
Led by the Joint Ministerial Committee on Private Healthcare Costs (JBMKKS), the MediAsas pilot is a critical first step toward full national implementation, slated for January 2027.
According to Bayan Lepas MP Sim Tze Tzin, MediAsas delivers health coverage at premiums that are substantially more affordable than current market offerings, starting at RM60 per month and scaling with age to roughly RM500, well below most existing medical insurance plans.
"MediAsas opens the door for millions of uninsured Malaysians to access coverage they can actually afford.
"At the same time, the government is rolling out the RESET strategy, a comprehensive reform designed to tackle healthcare cost inflation, which is at the very root of premium hikes," he told reporters at Parliament today.
Sim, who also serves as Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, stressed that these reforms are the product of a deep, system-wide review of Malaysia’s healthcare ecosystem.
He explained that the RESET framework shifts the paradigm by driving price transparency, bolstering primary care, encouraging more efficient, value-driven treatment via Diagnosis-Related Groups and ensuring all stakeholders share the burden of cost control.
"MediAsas and RESET are two sides of the same reform coin. MediAsas broadens access, while RESET attacks the underlying drivers of soaring premiums. It’s time to stop treating symptoms and start fixing the system," he said.
The JBMKKS, co-chaired by Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, has officially branded MediAsas as the anchor product under the MHIT (Basic Medical and Health Insurance/Takaful Plan).
As a flagship initiative within the RESET framework, MediAsas is poised to expand affordable, sustainable medical coverage while helping reshape Malaysia’s private healthcare financing landscape and drive lasting systemic change.
