Norwegians Name Baby After Haaland As Birth Follows World Cup Goal

STOCKHOLM, July 3 (Bernama-dpa) -- A couple in a Norwegian village have named their newborn son after football star Erling Haaland amid the World Cup fever sweeping the country, the German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing local media on Friday.

The baby girl was born in the exact minute -- the 86th -- when the striker scored the winner on Tuesday in Norway's last-32 victory over Ivory Coast, TV2 reported. She was subsequently given the name "Erle", the feminine form of "Erling".

"When I felt she was coming, I heard a loud cheer from my husband, who is a big football fan," mother Lene said. "I immediately knew that something else must have happened."

The goal inspired father Bjarte to rethink their choice of names for his daughter.

"We hadn't quite decided yet and had several names on the shortlist," mother Lene added. "Erle wasn't on the list but then my partner suddenly brought up the name -- and that's how it happened."

The Scandinavians next face Brazil on Sunday in the round of 16, the furthest they have been at men's World Cups.
