KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- Econili Battery Sdn Bhd (Econili) has made significant strides in managing and recycling electric vehicle (EV) batteries in Malaysia, addressing the country’s growing challenge of handling these materials.

According to a company statement, the latest report by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) projects that Malaysia will need to manage approximately 870,000 EV batteries by 2050.

“Malaysia is taking proactive steps to tackle this challenge. Among the key players in developing the EV battery recycling ecosystem is Econili Battery New Energy Sdn Bhd, which has shown notable progress in this area,” the statement said.

Econili’s commitment to sustainability was recently recognised through the Future Vision and Commitment to Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Award in the Sustainability Business Leader category at the recent ESG Plus Awards 2025, highlighting its adherence to ESG principles.

The lithium-ion battery recycling company said the award underscores its efforts not only in strengthening Malaysia’s recycling infrastructure but also in reducing environmental impact through responsible business practices.

According to Econili, it has invested in developing Malaysia’s largest battery recycling facility located in Perak, with a processing capacity of up to 24,000 tonnes of batteries per year.

“This high-tech factory operates using a closed system that complies with the strict standards of the Department of Environment, thus ensuring minimal impact on the environment throughout the recycling process,” it said.

It added that Econili’s success and recognition at the ESG Plus Awards 2025 further reinforce its position as a leader in integrating ESG values into company operations.

“As reported by MGTC, Malaysia faces significant challenges in managing used EV batteries. However, initiatives such as the Econili facility are helping the country build a strong foundation to meet the growing demand in this sector,” read the statement.
