KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 (Bernama) -- The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Kuala Lumpur commenced its operations on Wednesday, marking it as the fourth office of its kind in ASEAN.
The Foreign Ministry said the opening of the office marks a historic milestone that significantly strengthens the robust and positive relationship between Malaysia and Hong Kong.
“Malaysia welcomes the commencement of operations of the HKETO in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 10,” it said in a statement.
The HKETO establishment was first proposed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the bilateral meeting with Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu in July 2023.
With the opening of the HKETO in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Hong Kong aim to further enhance cooperation in trade, investment, economic development, and regional collaboration, reinforcing Malaysia’s role as an important partner to Hong Kong in ASEAN, the ministry added.
From January to October 2025, total trade between Malaysia and Hong Kong amounted to RM92.88 billion (US$21.54 billion).
In 2024, total trade reached RM105.46 billion (US$23.15 billion), with Malaysia enjoying a trade surplus.
