GEORGE TOWN, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- Penang’s tourism industry is poised for a major boost with the launch of the “Penang Princess”, the state’s first high-end cruise ship restaurant designed to enhance its maritime attractions.
Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the project marks a significant milestone in Penang’s maritime tourism development, laying a solid foundation for the state to become a more diversified and competitive international tourism destination.
“Penang Princess is the first high-end cruise ship in Penang that integrates luxury dining and a sea sightseeing experience.
“It will further extend Penang’s tourism appeal from Penang Island to the Straits of Malacca. The project not only enriches Penang’s tourism product offerings but also creates multi-faceted economic benefits for the state,” he said in a statement today.
Yeoh was present to witness the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding among the project’s partners, Ocean World Cruise Holdings Group and Viet Princess Cruiser Corporation, held here yesterday.
Yeoh said the project is expected to generate substantial economic momentum, creating new job opportunities across sectors, including hotels, catering, and maritime operations.
“At the same time, the cruise ship’s operation will drive the development of related supply chains, including maritime services, logistics and transportation, food supply and entertainment and event production,” he said.
As a premium tourism product, Yeoh said the Penang Princess cruise ship will attract more high-spending tourists, stimulate local consumption, extend visitor stays, and strengthen demand for Penang's tourism products.
He said the cruise ship has the potential to become a key venue for sea weddings, corporate events and cultural experiences, among others.
“This plan not only enriches Penang’s tourism portfolio but also enhances our competitive position in the regional tourism market,” he added.
