SHAH ALAM, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) plans to expand the Sukan Rakyat (People's Games) programme to the district level in Selangor to revive traditional sports among the people.
Shah Alam Mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said this after the programme, organised in conjunction with the Royal Wedding Appreciation 'Santunan Kasih’ Ceremony at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam today, received an encouraging response, particularly with the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah, and his consort, Datin Paduka Seri Afzaa Fadini Abdul Aziz, gracing the event.
"The response today was very encouraging and we received a positive reaction from all parties, including the Raja Muda of Selangor. His Highness also expressed his view that the Games to be held at the district level.
"We have also discussed with the palace about holding the Games in a more orderly manner, including holding a league for several traditional sports, like playing football wearing kain pelekat (sarong),” he told reporters after the end of the Games.
Mohd Fauzi said the winners of the league or championships held at the district level might even get a chance to compete in the final at the palace grounds as a form of respect and symbolic recognition of the people's sporting heritage.
"If the proposal (for the final to be played at the palace grounds) is accepted, it will be a huge honour to the winners and the traditional sport itself.
"The proposal will be discussed together with state Rural Development, Unity and Consumer Committee chairman Datuk Rizam Ismail, as well as with other relevant parties,” he said.
Regarding the presence of spectators at the Games today, Mohd Fauzi said it managed to attract over 1,500 people, comprising department staff, local community and representatives from districts in Selangor.
"Thankfully, we had clear weather and extremely good cooperation from all parties. Most importantly, the Palace authorities were also satisfied with the organisation,” he said.
The Sukan Rakyat (People's Games) programme comprised several traditional games, like congkak, galah panjang, batu seremban and sepak raga.
